Welcome to Blessed Sacrament Parish, Enugu Diocese

History of Blessed Sacrament Parish

The request by Catholics who attended morning adoration and morning mass at the Bishop's Chapel to have their own Parish and the desire of the Bishop Emeritus, Rt. Rev. Dr.A.O. Gbuji to establish a church of perpetual adoration marked the beginning of the Blessed Sacrament Parish. Work started on the present site on 23rd May, 2000 with the digging of the foundation and the blessing of the site and celebration of Holy Mass by the Bishop Emeritus. The original drawing of the church building was made by Architect Callistus llozumba but the drawing was later modified by the addition of the two wings of the building.

The first contractor was Engineer Julius Akpuokwe. The initial construction and supervising team comprised Colonel Emmanuel Udeaja, Colonel Patrick Anwunah, Late Chief Boniface Ezeani with Engr. Ben Ngwuocha as Chairman. This team was responsible for directing the siting, design and construction of the main church building from the foundation to the erection of beams, shutters and wall plates. When the worshippers overflowed the Bishops Chapel, the Bishop Emeritus gave approval for the celebration of Sunday mass on the lawns of the Bishop's Court and the establishment of the Parish Pastoral Council. The first meeting of the Parish council was held on 3rd April 2002 with the following composition:

  • • Rev. Fr. Ogbogu Ubaka - Chairman

Rev. Fr. Ubaka who was the pioneer acting Parish Priest, was replaced by Rev. Fr. Jonathan, who was later replaced by Rev. Fr. Romanus Ejim. All these who served the Parish as Acting Parist Priests worked tirelessly towards laying a good foundation for the establishment of Blessed Sacrament Parish. The number of worshippers increased by leaps and bounds and on 15th March, 2003, parishioners moved to the present site for the celebration of Sunday Masses under the Melina tree or in the KSM Hall whenever it rained.

Thereafter, the construction of the old church continued with increased vigour. The pioneer and substantive Parish Priest, Rev. Fr Sylvester Nwodo, assumed duty on 1st June 2000 Among the major structural developments made by him were:.

  • • Completion of the old church
  • • Fencing of the church premises
  • • Construction of domestic quarters
  • • Roofing, tiling and installation of doors and windows in the main church
  • • Foundation of the main Fathers house or Presbytery.

Fr. Nwodo was replaced by Rev. Fr. Josephat Obodo in January 2010. His physical achievements were:

  • • Completion of the Fathers house
  • • Surfacing and interlocking of the church premises.

Rev. Fr. Obodo left for Germany in December 2011 and was replaced by Rev. Fr. Theophilus Ozoamaluj as Acting parish priest for a period of six months. He built the fathers kitchen and laundry. Rev. Fr. Amobi Omeayo was appointed parish Priest in August 2012. So far his structural achievements include:

  • • Construction of Chapel of Perpetual Adoration.
  • • Re-roofing of the main church
  • • Replacement of windows in the main church
  • • Electrification of main church (on-going)
  • • Construction of gate house.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH OF THE PARISH

While the structures and buildings were being erected, the spiritual needs of worshipers were also taken care of. The Pioneer Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Sylvester Nwodo did the following:

  • • Introduction of four masses (6am, Sam, 9am, and 6pm) on Sundays.
  • • Two Masses (morning and evening) on weekdays
  • • Confessions after morning and evening masses on weekdays
  • • Adoration and lauds (morning prayer) at 5.1 Sam daily except on Sundays.
  • • Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 3pm every Friday.
  • • Establishment of Charity Committee.

The second Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Josephat Obodo introduced Rosary Procession every evening by 5pm as well as regular novenas. The present Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Amobi Omeayo so far has;

  • • Introduced Morning Mass in Latin on Wednesdays
  • • Introduced Prayer Manual for evening prayers and Benediction every Sunday evening
  • • Formed two home-grown musical bands operated by parishioners for worship on Sundays.
  • • Introduced the popular Catechetical School on Saturdays for Children and Youths.

The Almighty God has graciously blessed the efforts of the Clergy and Laity, as well as friends and well-wishers of the parish. At age 10, Blessed Sacrament Parish has one of the most beautiful Churches and probably the strongest spiritual outfit among parishes in the Catholic Diocese of Enugu. May the Name of the Lord be blessed, adored, praised and extolled forever and ever, Amen.
